The Lamont School of Music
Located at the southwest corner of Iliff Avenue and South University Boulevard in Denver, the 180,000 square-foot Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts anchors the south end of campus and houses both Virginia E. Trevorrow Hall on the north, home to the Lamont School of Music, as well as a concert/grand opera hall and flexible theatre on the south. The enclosed Joy Burns Plaza joins the two components of the Center.
Trevorrow Hall finally reunites the Lamont School of Music with the University Park campus. Housing technologically sophisticated studios for teaching, rehearsing and practicing, the building also houses a magnificent music library with keyboard/computer lab, a professional recording studio, small performance spaces, spacious practice rooms, "smart-to-the-seat" classrooms and acoustically sophisticated rehearsal spaces.
Exceptional Acoustics
The University of Denver enlisted the assistance of acoustical professionals Kirkegaard Associates and their mutual goal was to create a truly world-class facility with exceptional acoustics. The Newman Center was designed as a series of freestanding buildings separated from one another by a two-inch acoustical joint. This gap creates an air space that abates vibration from traveling from one space to the other. Therefore, the Newman Center can hold simultaneous performances and rehearsals in each of the major performance and rehearsal venues without creating any sound interference.
A High-Tech Facility
The Newman Center uses state-of-the-art technology in both communications and audio/visual equipment. Each of the performance, rehearsal and practice spaces in the Newman Center are wired to the recording studio, located in the lower level of Trevorrow Hall. From international artists performing in Gates Hall, to faculty and student recitals in any of the rehearsal spaces, each room may be multi-track recorded to produce professional quality recordings. Classrooms use "smart-to-the-seat" technology, whereby computer ports and electrical outlets are wired to every seat in every classroom in the building.
An "All-Steinway School"
The Lamont School of Music became the 27th "All-Steinway School" when they successfully completed a campaign to purchase 85 acoustical pianos from the Steinway Piano Company.
